We tasted a banh xeo first up after a short ride and got to watch the lady make them and a lesson on how to eat it rolled in lettuce and herbs. Then we went and had grilled sticky rice and banana. Toured around the old American army housing area and then had a beef noodle soup, a bit different to Pho. Next was crispy rice crackers which we got to toast in hot coals, next a beer with grilled beef sausage on lemongrass sticks, and then finished with flan cake, a bit like a creme caramel but in sweet coffee..nice! The students are very informative about the food and where we were going and anything else, asking us lots of questions about our lives too. Tom got a bit of a singalong going as we rode around which was also fun!A really good night with plenty to eat and drink and lots to see. The bike riding was pretty hair-raising for a terrible backseat driver such as myself but was a great way to explore the city and literally rub shoulders with the locals. The food was all great but not easy to pronounce and it was good to go to where the locals eat and avoid being ripped off or food poisoned! My favourites were probably the banana rice and the spicy pork & rice washed down with sugar cane juice. Plus we tried a few cans of the local beer. They were passionate about telling us about themselves as much as they were eager to know about us. We had 5 students Hong, Navy, Tony, Nue, Casey for our family of 5 our kids 10, 12, 15 yrs old. They all spoke great English, were very friendly and were keen to practice and improve their English. We felt safe and it was an exciting experience for the family. The tour went from 530 and dropped us back at the hotel at about 10pm. It was so reasonably priced, that we weren’t sure what to expect - it far exceeded our expectations. Our tour organiser, Raymond had it all under control , was charming and full of energy. Our other tour guides, Denis, Kristine and Kent were wonderful - so skilled at navigating these crazy streets that we felt safe and well taken care of all the time, charming and well spoken. They shared their culture with us in a way that brought it to life. We never would have experienced Ho Chi Minh city by ourselves the way we did with them only were we invited to share some extremely foreign and delicious food, but they also showed us around so many areas and told us interesting facts about life in the city.
